This week, assault and dangerous driving charges have been laid against a motorcyclist who allegedly pushed a cyclist while driving in Nanaimo, causing them to fall and become injured.
The incident occurred on August 2nd near the intersection of Departure Bay Road and Granite Park Road.
Footage of the incident was captured in its entirety on a dashcam from a passing vehicle, which then went viral on social media and was circulated widely in and around Nanaimo.
According to Nanaimo RCMP, after the cyclist was allegedly shoved, he lost control of his bike and ended up colliding with the raised sidewalk, crashing face first into concrete.
The motorcyclist did not stop to help.
Police say the cyclist required medical attention, but only sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
After just over two months, police have identified the motorcyclist as 48-year-old Marcel Trudeau of Nanaimo, and have charged him with both assault and dangerous driving.
“The resulting attention by local media and the public after viewing and posting the video of the incident, was extremely useful as it allowed the investigation to move forward and for police to identify the suspect, “said R/Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
Trudeau’s first court appearance is set for Tuesday October 7th, in the Nanaimo Provincial Court.
