Hornby Island’s Tribune Bay campground getting massive $6.6M upgrade

Share

Big changes are happening at Tribune Bay Park on Hornby Island.

Construction has begun on a multi-million-dollar redevelopment of the campground, which aims to provide visitors with more comfort and space.

The $6.6 million project will turn the former private campground into a BC Parks site focused on privacy and amenities.

Once completed, the campground will offer a mix of pull-through and back-in sites, with both electrified and non-electrified options, as well as a few small, basic cabins.

New pit toilets and an accessible shower building are also planned.

To improve biodiversity and manage stormwater, more than 5,000 plants will be added throughout the site, providing campers with more natural privacy.

Currently, the campground has about 120 sites. About 40 of these will be moved to another area of the park by winter 2027 to create more space between campsites.

The exact location of the new sites is still being decided.

Phase one of construction is expected to be completed by May 2026. Public input on Phase two will begin later this year.

Additionally, BC Parks is replacing the aging picnic shelter in the day-use area.

Some temporary closures of the beach trail and the outdoor education center will occur during construction, but alternative routes to the beach will remain open.

Tribune Bay is well-known for its stunning rock formations, wide white-sand beach, and warm, shallow waters. It is one of Hornby Island’s favorite spots.

Since the Province purchased the last private beachfront property and the campground in 2021, officials have been collaborating with local residents and First Nations to ensure the redevelopment honours the area’s unique character.

When the project is finished, it aims to provide campers with a fresh experience while preserving what makes Tribune Bay special.
