Two local favourites in Victoria, Routine Coffee & Supply and Hero Sandwiches, will be teaming up to bring Victorians some special sandwiches this weekend.
Since opening their brick and mortar in January, Routine is quickly becoming one of the city’s most beloved spots to grab a coffee to go or to pick up some unique beans.
The café began as a pop-up which was often run out of the back of a small truck at makers markets and various events throughout the city.
Hero Sandwiches still operates as a pop-up, but is actively seeking a space to call their own to bring their “fat stacks” sandwiches to the masses.
Sporadically, over the past few years, Hero has been running their pop-ups out of Standard Pizza, and selling out every time.
For this collaboration between the two businesses, Hero Sandwiches owner and operator Julie will be dropping off a limited quantity of a new sandwich to the café over the weekend, and expects them to sell out daily.
The sandwich Julie will be preparing for Routine will be a mortadella panino on fresh-baked ciabatta.
This panino will feature paper-thin Italian mortadella, stracciatella (which is the creamy filling inside burrata), pickled guindilla peppers (a mild pepper that is similar to pepperoncini, and buttery Castelvetrano olives from Sicily
Only around 30 of these paninos will be available each day at the café, and unlike the Hero Sandwiches pop-ups at Standard Pizza, there’s no pre-sale for this one.
Julie says that she’s been working on the idea of making some smaller, more traditional Italian sandwiches for some time now.
“Customers have told me that they love the heros but also want the option of a smaller sandwich,” she told Victoria Buzz.
She added that while Standard Pizza has been a great location for the Hero pop-ups, she also wanted to start collaborating with other local businesses.
“I’d been casually chatting with Routine Coffee for months about doing something together—coffee and sandwiches is one of my favourite combos,” said Julie.
“I think it makes a lot of sense for Routine to be where I launch these smaller sandwiches; we have so many of the same customers and these panini are a great grab-and-go option for their shop.”
Routine Coffee partners Garrett Olson and Marley Reburn say the idea was an instant “yes” for them.
“We are excited to partner with Julie and as a business that began as a pop-up ourselves we are grateful to partner with other people that are on that pop-up journey,” Reburn told Victoria Buzz.
Though Routine has not devised a drink specifically for this collaboration, they say their current feature called the “Rock Em’ Squash Em’” will go perfectly with Hero’s panino.
Reburn says the Rock Em’ Squash Em’ is a latte with house made miso and smoked sea salt hubbard squash syrup, which offers savoury and sweet autumnal vibes.
Additionally, Routine has stocked up on beans for purchase and revamped their filter coffee menu in preparation for the weekend.
The Hero and Routine Collaboration will be taking place from Friday, October 24th through until Sunday, October 26th.
Sandwiches will be sold on a first-come first-served basis from 11 a.m. until they sell out.
