Shoppers at the Courtenay Costco got more than their usual samples last week when a couple was spotted celebrating their wedding inside the store.
The special moment left everyone smiling and proved that love and savings really do go hand in hand.
The pair, who were married earlier that day on October 25th, decided to head straight to Costco to celebrate their special day instead of hosting a traditional reception.
Wearing matching “Bride” and “Groom” name tags, they were greeted with cheers from staff and customers, and even treated to cake and hot dogs courtesy of Costco.
One shopper, Lana Jean, said she happened to be shopping that day and spotted the couple at the food court.
“I don’t think they actually got married there,” she said.
“I think they just went there after they got married instead of a reception. They love Costco so much, so they decided to celebrate there on their special day. It was awesome to see.”
Jean said the atmosphere in the store was filled with joy and community spirit.
“People are amazing, and to find joy on a special occasion in a simple place such as Costco is neat,” she said.
“Everyone who was there was really moved by seeing them find happiness in such a simple way. The lady in front of me was going to pay for their cake, and we were all so appreciative of how the Courtenay Costco staff embraced what they were celebrating.”
She added that the Courtenay Costco isn’t quite as busy as the ones in Victoria, which made the gesture even more special. “It was amazing to see the staff take the time to make their visit special on their special day,” she said.
Jean also noted that more people seem to be marking life milestones at Costco, from birthdays to date nights, and this celebration fit right in.
As one shopper joked on her way out, “They’re so smart — now they can save for a house instead of being in debt for a wedding.”
While the couple’s identities remain unknown, they later shared online that they’ve been overwhelmed by the love and positivity they’ve received, saying they hope to inspire others to spread more kindness in the world.
Photos of the moment quickly made their way across social media, with locals calling it “the most Vancouver Island thing ever.”
So next time you’re at Costco picking up muffins or paper towels, keep your eyes open. You never know when the next great love story might unfold between the aisles.
