8-year-old Victoria boy walks for the first time using robotic legs

A little boy in Victoria was able to walk for the first time by using a robotic walking legs system designed for kids who have never experienced walking.

Elliot Burns is an 8-year-old boy who lives with quadriplegic cerebral palsy and had never walked on his own until recently.

He was recently able to trial a robotic walking device created by Canadian robotics company, Trexo.

Following this trial, Elliot’s family has set up an online fundraiser, dubbed the ‘Walking Together’ campaign, in order to raise the funds needed to purchase the robotic walking system.

“This trial was nothing short of magical: to see Elliot take steps, upright and supported, was a moment full of emotions; our very first time holding hands walking together,” wrote the boy’s family on the fundraiser webpage.

“We believe Elliot deserves every opportunity to grow, explore, and live life to the fullest.”

Trexo’s robotic walking system consists of a robotic exoskeleton and promotes natural walking patterns, allowing users benefits for bone strength, posture, cognition and inclusion.

According to the Burns family, it adapts to a child’s growth and needs, helping with spasticity, muscle tone, balance and more.

Elliot’s family says that traditional walkers are too heavy and difficult for the boy to use, but with Trexo, he can move safely and independently.

Through the Walking Together fundraiser, the Burns family are hoping to raise $46,000 to purchase the robotic legs for Elliot.

Thus far, they have been able to raise just over $8,480 CAD through the SupportNow platform. It is important to note that the fundraiser webpage only displays fundraiser goals and updates in USD.

Those who cannot donate are asked to share Elliot’s story far and wide via social media, email and word of mouth.

“From the bottom of our hearts, with immense hope and gratitude, thank you for believing, for giving, and for walking with us,” wrote the Burns family.
