Nanaimo RCMP are investigating numerous reports of a prowler peering into residents’ windows in residential neighbourhoods.
Police say that they have been receiving an influx of prowler-related reports for the central and south Nanaimo neighborhoods since early August.
Reports from concerned residents typically describe the suspect to be an unknown man who had been seen on the residents’ private property, looking into windows.
Police noted that most of the incidents occurred late at night; however, several have occurred during the day.
According to Nanaimo RCMP, these prowler incidents are being treated as a priority, given the concern they have caused in the community.
To stop these incidents and find the suspect, patrols have been increased in the affected areas and investigators are actively following up on leads.
While the investigation is ongoing, police are reminding residents to:
- Ensure doors, windows and gates are locked at night
- Make use of exterior lighting and motion sensors where possible
- Report suspicious people or activity immediately to police by calling 911
- Review home security camera footage and share any relevant recordings with investigators
“These types of incidents can be very unsettling for residents,” said RCMP R/Cst. Gary O’Brien, Media Relations Officer with the Nanaimo RCMP.
“We want to assure the public that these reports are being taken seriously, and we encourage anyone who observes suspicious activity to contact us right away.”
