Campfires allowed again across Vancouver Island as ban is lifted

Share

Good news for campers, backyard fire-pit fans, and anyone who has been hoping to roast marshmallows under the stars.

The campfire ban is officially being lifted across Vancouver Island.

Starting at noon on Thursday, September 25th, the BC Wildfire Service’s Coastal Fire Centre is canceling its fire ban.

This means that residents and visitors can once again enjoy small campfires, cooking fires, and outdoor fireplaces.

This change comes after fire danger ratings decreased due to cooler weather and recent rainfall. However, officials are reminding everyone to be cautious.

Fires must always be supervised by an adult, with water or a shovel nearby to put them out. They must be completely extinguished before leaving the site.

While the province has lifted restrictions, local bylaws still apply. For instance, the City of Parksville and the Regional District of Nanaimo each have their own rules for outdoor burning that people must follow.

Beach fires are still not allowed in the Parksville Qualicum Wildlife Management Area and can be reported to the provincial RAPP line.

Authorities are urging everyone to enjoy this return responsibly. Although the danger has lessened, one careless fire can cause a serious problem.

So whether you’re camping at Rathtrevor, gathering in the backyard with friends, or planning an evening out this fall, campfires are back on the menu.

Just keep them safe, small, and smart!
