Campfire ban partially lifted for parts of Vancouver Island

The Coastal Fire Centre is easing some restrictions as cooler weather and recent rainfall reduce fire danger in parts of the region.

The BC Wildfire Service says the ban, introduced on July 17th, will be lifted in the Campbell River Forest District, North Island Central Coast Forest District, and Sunshine Coast Forest District starting at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, September 17th.

Campfires are also allowed in the Haida Gwaii Forest District, where restrictions had already been relaxed.

In these areas, residents and visitors can use sky lanterns, wood-fired hot tubs, wood-fired pizza ovens, and other wood-fuelled devices, as long as they are not enclosed in buildings.

Restrictions still in place

Despite this partial lifting, Category 2 and Category 3 open fires remain banned across the entire Coastal Fire Centre.

This includes:

  • Backyard and industrial burning
  • Fireworks
  • Burn barrels and burn cages

These bans will stay in effect until at least October 31st, unless officials lift the order sooner.

Safety reminders

The Coastal Fire Centre is urging the public to remain very cautious when lighting campfires. Fires must be small, no larger than 0.5 metres by 0.5 metres. They should never be left unattended and must be fully put out before leaving.

Other important reminders include:

  • Avoid burning in windy conditions
  • Clear a fireguard around the campfire area
  • Ensure ashes are cool before leaving

Officials remind everyone that human-caused wildfires are preventable and can take resources away from fires caused by lightning.

Anyone found violating the restrictions may face fines of up to $100,000, penalties, or even jail time. To report a wildfire, call 1-800-663-5555 or dial *5555 on a cell phone.

As of this publication, there are seven active wildfires on Vancouver Island. All were listed as “under control” except for a small 0.1-hectare blaze at Dunsmuir Creek, which was classified as “being held.”
