Ball python and rat abandoned at Sooke Potholes now recovering at CRD shelter

A recent visit to Sooke Potholes Regional Park led to an unusual discovery that has left animal shelter staff both concerned and grateful.

According to the Capital Regional District (CRD), a citizen spotted a small box left beside their parked vehicle. Inside were two abandoned pets, a ball python wrapped in a pillowcase and a domestic rat.

The CRD says it’s clear the animals were intentionally left at the site.

Animal shelter staff quickly responded after being called and took the pair into care. The snake, now named Ivory, was found with injuries to her head.

She was immediately brought for veterinary treatment and is now recovering comfortably and will be watched before being made available for adoption.

The rat, affectionately named Sable, is described as friendly and social. She is also being cared for at the shelter and will be looking for a new home soon.

In a Facebook post, the CRD reminded the public that abandoning animals is illegal and puts pets at risk of injury or death.

Those who want to help support Ivory and Sable’s care can contact the CRD Animal Shelter at 250-658-5745 or send an e-transfer to makingadifference@crd.bc.ca. Donations directly support abandoned and vulnerable animals in the region.
