Playoff baseball is back in Victoria!
The HarbourCats host the Edmonton Riverhawks tonight at Wilson’s Group Stadium for game one of the West Coast League’s North Divisional Series.
First pitch is at 6:35 p.m., and with the rest of the best-of-three series set to play out in Edmonton this weekend, this could be fans’ only chance to catch playoff action at home.
Victoria earned its spot with a late-season surge, overcoming a slow 12-14 start to finish the second half at 20-8 and post a 32-22 overall record. Edmonton matched that second-half mark but secured the higher seed thanks to a better head-to-head record.
The Riverhawks clinched the second-half North Division crown – and the seeding advantage – with a 7-2 win over the HarbourCats on Wednesday in Victoria.
Since joining the league in 2013, the HarbourCats have reached the WCL championship game three times – 2017, 2019, and 2023 – but are still chasing their first title. No Canadian team has ever won the championship.
The winner of this series will face either the Bellingham Bells or Wenatchee AppleSox in a one-game Divisional Final on August 12th. The West Coast League championship will also be decided in a single game, set for August 14th.
Elsewhere in the opening round, Bellingham visits Wenatchee, Portland faces Marion, and Corvallis meets Bend. Kamloops, Kelowna, and Nanaimo missed the post-season, leaving Victoria and Edmonton as the only Canadian teams in the playoffs.
