Experience the magical glow of lanterns!
The 12th annual Salish Sea Lantern Festival is scheduled to return next week, beginning on Sunday, August 17th and culminating in a dazzling waterfront celebration at Beacon Park on Saturday, August 23rd.
Presented by the ArtSea Community Arts Council, this free, family-friendly event is a harmonious blend of art, culture and community spirit—and it’s all done in tribute to our surrounding Salish Sea.
Starting August 17th, the Week of Lanterns will present residents with hands-on opportunities to build their own lanterns.
So, while you’re hard at work with your magical creations, large-scale lantern installations will begin to transform the peninsula with glowing displays throughout the community.
One of the festival’s favourite pieces, the giant jellyfish lanterns, will once again be seen at Garden Court for a month-long display.
Does this sound like something you’d like to be involved in? If so, fish lantern kits are available for purchase at participating local retailers, and jellyfish lantern kits can be picked up at the Sidney Street market on Thursday, August 21st.
These kits are easy to assemble and have everything you need to create your glowing masterpiece.

On August 23rd, the main event, the waterfront will come alive at 6:30 p.m. There will be live music, costumed characters, lantern installations to gawk at and activities for all ages.
Attendees are invited to walk with the lantern procession, which will set off from the Beacon Bandshell, follow along the Sidney Waterfront Walkway to Eastview Park and then loop back to finish in Beacon Park.
