RCMP warn of phishing scam after incident in Ladysmith via Facebook Marketplace

Share

RCMP have issued a warning against phishing scams after an incident was reported in Ladysmith involving Facebook Marketplace and a used vehicle.

According to police, the scammers will pose as interested buyers and reach out to sellers, asking for in-depth vehicle history and details.

The “buyers” will then send fraudulent links that mimic legitimate websites in order to collect personal information.

In unknowingly submitting personal information to the scammers, victims are putting themselves at risk of identity fraud.

This occurs when someone steals or reproduces the provided information to commit crimes, including accessing your email or bank accounts, applying for credit cards, or obtaining government benefits under your name.

These phishing scams often use urgency, impersonation and fake offers that will lure people in. Police say they may ask you to scan QR codes or download attachments that compromise your data.

To protect yourself, police recommend a few simple but effective steps:

  • Don’t click on suspicious links or provide personal information unless you’re absolutely certain of the recipient’s legitimacy
  • Keep an eye on your financial statements and credit reports, and report any unusual activity
  • Shred documents with personal details before throwing them out
  • Collect your mail regularly to avoid theft
  • If you’re moving, inform Canada Post and all your financial institutions to prevent mail from being delivered to the wrong address

If you suspect you’ve been targeted by a scam, contact your local RCMP detachment and report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
