Port Alberni RCMP are investigating a suspicious fire that occurred in-town, and led to one man’s death.
Police say that in the early morning hours of Saturday, August 2nd, officers responded to a report of a fire in the 2000-block of 16th Avenue in Port Alberni.
Officers arrived to find the home fully engulfed in flames, with firefighters at the scene.
Firefighters were attempting to put out the fire, and were also performing life saving measures on one adult male resident of the home.
Police say an adult female resident was also on-scene, suffering from fire and smoke related injuries.
“The victims were transported to hospitals outside the community,” said Port Alberni RCMP in a media release.
“The male later died from his injuries, and the female remains in hospital in stable but serious condition.”
A police forensic team has since conducted an examination of the scene, along with investigators from the Office of the Fire Commissioner.
Port Alberni RCMP are now investigating the circumstances that led to this fire, and are asking the public for any security or dash cam footage in the 16th Avenue and Neil Street neighbourhood between 10:30 p.m. on August 1st and 1:30 a.m. on August 2nd.
