A tense scene unfolded in downtown Victoria Friday afternoon when police shot a man with a less-lethal round just steps from city hall during a weapons call.
VicPD say the incident happened shortly before 4 p.m. near the intersection of Douglas Street and Pandora Avenue, when officers responded to reports of a person with a weapon.
The suspect was arrested after a single less-lethal round was fired and taken into custody.
No officers or bystanders were injured.
Witnesses say a large police presence descended on the area, including members of the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team. At least a dozen officers were seen on Pandora Avenue between Douglas and Broad streets just before the shot rang out.
The suspect was later taken away by ambulance.
While police have not confirmed the type of weapon involved, witnesses at the scene said the man may have been carrying a gun.
Pandora Avenue was temporarily closed to the public between Douglas and Broad streets as investigators marked evidence across the sidewalk, bike lane, and curb.
Victoria police say there is no ongoing threat to public safety, and the investigation is in its early stages.
