Comox Valley RCMP have arrested a man after a “serious assault” against an elderly man.
On August 10th at around 11:35 a.m., police received a report that a woman was heard screaming about her husband being attacked near Lewis Park in Courtenay.
Officers responded and found the elderly man on the ground, and he was bleeding heavily from his face.
A witness to the incident identified the suspect, who was standing a short distance away and he was taken into custody.
“This was a senseless attack on a vulnerable member of our community,” said Inspector Scott Mercer, Officer in Charge of the Comox Valley RCMP.
“We are grateful to witnesses who stepped forward to help and to those who provided critical information that led to the quick arrest of the suspect.”
The suspect, 29-year-old Mevlin Teagai, is known to police, and has been charged with aggravated assault and robbery.
He remains in custody awaiting his next court appearance.
The victim sustained significant injuries, though they’re not considered to be life-threatening. Police say he is expected to recover.
