This weekend, a motorist was arrested after breaking numerous traffic laws and crashing into other vehicles in Nanaimo and Ladysmith.
On August 2nd, at around 7 p.m., Ladysmith RCMP and Nanaimo RCMP responded to reports of a head-on collision at the intersection of the Trans Canada Highway (TCH) and Timberlands Road in Ladysmith.
Additionally, Nanaimo RCMP say they received multiple calls from drivers prior to the collision in Ladysmith of a driver breaking several traffic laws.
Police say the calls they received reported that the driver of a dark blue 2019 Dodge Ram 1500 was driving aggressively, speeding, hitting other vehicles and running red lights along the highway.
“Witnesses of the collision stated that the driver ran a red light at the Timberlands intersection at a high rate of speed, colliding with a Nissan Sentra, head on, and causing significant damage to the front end of the smaller vehicle,” said Nanaimo RCMP in a media release.
“The truck continued south, driving in the northbound lane, until it struck the center median.”
Police say, when the truck struck the median, the man who was the vehicle’s sole occupant attempted to flee the scene, but was quickly apprehended.
Paramedics responded to the scene to treat both occupants of the Nissan, and took them to hospital for further treatment.
Following the arrest, investigators are hoping to speak with witnesses who may have seen the truck driving erratically in person, and who may have obtained dash cam footage of the following incidents that occurred between 6:40 p.m. and 6:50 p.m. on August 2nd:
- Swerving onto the sidewalk while driving east on Bowen Road, then turning right onto Wakesiah Avenue
- Swerving onto the sidewalk near Ninth Street while traveling southbound on Bruce Street
- Running a red light at the TCH and while travelling southbound on Tenth Street intersection
- Running a red light at the Cedar Road intersection while driving southbound on the TCH
- Colliding with a maroon sedan, south of the Morden Road intersection while driving southbound on the TCH
Police are asking residents on Wakesiah Street, Bruce Street and Tenth Street to review their doorbell and dash cam footage for any recordings of the Dodge Ram 1500 in question.
