An investigation has been launched regarding a single-vehicle rollover near Nanaimo that shut down the highway for several hours.
On August 22nd at around 6:15 a.m., the rollover occurred just north of Superior Road along Highway 19 near Nanaimo, resulting in the closure of both north bound lanes.
Emergency services responded, and based on evidence at the scene, as well as eyewitness accounts, the driver is said to have gone off the roadway and struck a power pole.
The vehicle then came back on the highway before rolling several times, and eventually coming to a stop in the northbound lanes.
According to police, the 38-year-old driver sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to a hospital for medical treatment.
To provide a safe landing area for the air ambulance, the south bound lanes were closed temporarily.
Due to the lane closures, traffic was backed up significantly and had to be rerouted. At around 8:50 a.m., both northbound lanes reopened.
Police are asking for any further witnesses of the accident, or anyone with dashcam footage of the crash, to call Nanaimo RCMP at (250) 754-2345.
The investigation continues.
