BC Transit is introducing a new policy to reduce riders being passed up by a full bus.
Starting on August 18th, buses in the Victoria Regional Transit System will begin displaying a ‘Standing Room Only’ indicator, allowing passengers to board even when all of the seats are taken.
Bus operators will continue stopping at each designated stop, giving the riders the option to board and stand if space allows.
The bus will be considered full when there’s no longer any standing room in the front aisle, and passengers can no longer stay behind the red safety line near the driver.
The change coincides with September’s annual surge in ridership as students return to school, and other commuters return to regular routines after the summer.
“While this change will reduce pass-ups in the region, BC Transit recognizes this may also mean less physical space for riders on buses without available seating,” a recent media release reads.
“We ask everyone to remain patient and courteous, and for standing passengers to continue moving towards the back of the bus to accommodate more riders.”
Additionally, BC Transit says it will add extra trips on busy routes when resources allow to fine-tune service.
