Victoria brewery launches campaign to raise $10K for salmon conservation

Vancouver Island Brewing (VIB) has launched a campaign to raise money for the Pacific Salmon Foundation.

To do this, the company has partnered with three iconic fishing lodges on Vancouver Island and together, set their sights on a goal of raising $10,000.

As of Tuesday July 1st, VIB will be donating $1 from each special edition Islander Lager eight-pack to the Pacific Salmon Foundation, which will support salmon habitat protection and restoration work.

To help them raise this money, VIB has brought Nootka Marine Adventures, Tofino Resort and Marina as well as Reel Obsession Sport Fishing on board as collaborators, all of whom will be donating guided fishing trip packages to the campaign.

To win one of these packages, VIB took inspiration from the 1964 classic children’s novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and hid golden cans of lager in some eight-packs.

Those who find a golden can will be entered into a prize draw for one of the three fishing lodges’ getaways.

“Islander is about celebrating what makes BC special,” said Ana Wagner-Chazalon, Marketing Manager at Vancouver Island Brewing.

“We know our drinkers. They fish, camp, care about the coast, and care about community. We saw an opportunity for Islander Lager to do something bigger this summer. This is our way of letting the beer give back to the landscapes and communities that inspired it.”

The eight-packs that will help raise money for the Pacific Salmon Foundation will be specially marked and should be available now in liquor stores throughout BC.

VIB announced last year that they would be closing down their brewery, as the rent had been raised by 35%, and they could no longer afford to have their own space.

Now, the company has partnered with Phillips Brewing to contract brew their products for them, using the recipes developed by VIB.

Though they have lost their physical space, the company is still working hard to brew some of Canada’s oldest craft beer.
