Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) have arrested a youth in connection to a suspected homicide that occurred in Lake Cowichan last September.

On September 3rd, at 11 p.m., Lake Cowichan RCMP attended a residence in the 7900 block Cowichan Lake road to check a property for Tavis Cragg who was reported missing from Nanaimo earlier that day.

Police discovered Cragg’s body on the premises and launched a homicide investigation with help from VIIMCU.

Investigators identified a suspect in the case and met with him, but did not arrest him at that time.

On September 20th, 2024, police provided an update regarding the case, calling on motorists who were in the area on the day of Cragg’s death to submit dashcam footage to VIIMCU for the investigation.

Nearly a year later, VIIMCU investigators announced they had arrested the suspect who was previously identified by investigators.

VIIMCU says the suspect has now been charged with second degree murder, and has been released with multiple court-ordered conditions.

The suspect’s identity cannot be shared at this time because they are a minor, and are protected by the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Police say that no further details will be provided at this time, as the matter is now before the courts.
