HarbourCats to honour retiring VicPD Chief Del Manak at upcoming home game

After nearly a decade as Victoria’s police chief and more than 35 years in policing, VicPD Chief Del Manak is preparing to retire at the end of August.

But before he hangs up the badge, the community will have a chance to say thank you in a special way.

On Wednesday, July 30th, the Victoria HarbourCats will host Salute to Del Manak & VicPD Night during their home game against the Kamloops NorthPaws at Wilson’s Group Stadium at Royal Athletic Park. The event will celebrate Chief Manak’s long-standing service and leadership in Greater Victoria.

“Chief Manak — who doesn’t simply call him Del? — has become a friend to so many through his leadership, and he deserves a rousing thank you from us all,” said Jim Swanson, Managing Partner of the HarbourCats.

“We have had a strong partnership borne of a similar view of how to build this great community and make it better. Del has done a tremendous job.”

Born and raised in Victoria, Manak has become a well-known figure both within VicPD and the broader community. He began his policing career more than three decades ago and has led the department since 2017.

His focus has long been on public safety, transparency, and strengthening relationships between police and the public.

Manak is a graduate of the FBI National Academy Program and the Dalhousie University Police Leadership Program, and he holds a Master of Arts in terrorism, risk and security studies from Simon Fraser University.

Over the years, he has received numerous honours, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, the Police Exemplary Service Medal, the King Charles III Coronation Medal, and most recently, Officer of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces in 2024.

At the July 30th game, Manak will take a moment to address the crowd before throwing out the ceremonial first pitch. Members of VicPD will also be in attendance to support their outgoing chief and engage with the public.

Displays from specialized units such as the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team (GVERT) and the Integrated Canine Service (ICS) will be part of the night’s festivities.

Swanson joked that while Manak’s record is nearly flawless, “About the only thing we can fault him on — the New York Islanders, really, he cheers for them?”

His official retirement will take place at the end of August. Manak announced his decision in 2024, calling it an honour to have served the community he grew up in. He expressed gratitude to the public and said he looked forward to spending more time with family and embracing life after policing.

His successor, Fiona Wilson, was announced earlier this year. Wilson is currently serving as one of three deputy chief constables with the Vancouver Police Department (VPD). Through her career, she has more than 26 years of experience she will bring to VicPD.

Tickets for the July 30th game and all 2025 HarbourCats home games can be purchased online, by calling 778-265-0327, or by visiting the HarbourCats office at 101-1814 Vancouver Street.

Fans are encouraged to arrive early, wear HarbourCats or VicPD gear, and be part of a memorable night honouring one of Victoria’s most dedicated public servants.
