Firefighters battle massive garbage fire at waste facility in Rock Bay

Share

Last night, a massive fire ignited at the GFL Environmental waste facility in the 500-block of Bay Street.

The blaze and plumes of smoke was visible across the water from parts of Vic West and downtown Victoria.

Firefighters responded to the fire around 10 p.m. last night, with the blaze well underway by 10:15 p.m.

When crews arrived, they discovered that the pile of waste sitting under a large awning had ignited and burnt through the awning’s fabric, leaving only the frame.

Although no injuries or significant property damage resulted from this blaze, the cause of the fire is still unknown.

The fire was extinguished just before 2 a.m.

A similar fire was ignited at a nearby recycling facility, Cascades Recovery+, last July.

Additionally, the year before that, a fire ignited at Ellice Recycling in July, which similarly destroyed their awning that covered the refuse in their yard.

More to come as details are released.
