The beloved white raven, Blizzard, has died while being cared for at Vancouver Island’s North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre (NIWRC).
According to NIWRC, Blizzard’s death was untimely, so a wildlife veterinarian will be conducting a necropsy to determine the cause of death.
They added that recently a resident snowy owl, named Elsa, also passed away in an untimely way, so her death will also be investigated.
“It is with profound sadness we share the passing of Blizzard, one of our beloved leucistic ravens,” said NIWRC in a social media post.
“Blizzard was more than just a resident at NIWRA, he was a symbol of resilience, beauty, and connection. His presence touched the hearts of staff, volunteers, and visitors from near and far.”
They added that his voice was one of the most recognizable sounds at the centre and that the grounds will feel much quieter without him.
“We will continue to share updates as we learn more. Thank you for holding Blizzard, Elsa and all of us in your thoughts during this difficult time,” NIWRC concluded.
Blizzard came into the NIWRC’s care in 2021 after being found in critical condition, and became viewable to the public at the centre in 2022.
Once quite shy and timid, Blizzard began to open up and interact with visitors to the Errington facility he was held, just outside Parksville.
Blizzard was not an albino raven, but rather a leucistic one.
Leucism is a condition in animals where there is a partial loss of pigmentation, resulting in white or pale patches on the skin, hair, feathers or scales, with the eyes retaining their normal color.
NIWRC is a non-profit organization that is open to visitors daily. Information on donating to them, or volunteering with them is available via their website.
