Saanich Police warn of a bear spotted near UVic digging through garbage

Share

Saanich Police have issued a warning after multiple reports were received of a black bear sighting near UVic this morning.

The animal was spotted near the 2300 block of Queenswood Drive, digging through garbage cans.

Anyone wandering around outside in the area is asked to be alert and cautious. If you come across the bear, remain calm and back away slowly.

“We’d also like to remind residents need to make sure that they are securing garbage cans so that they don’t become an attractant to bears,” a Saanich PD media release reads.

“Failure to do so may result in a fine.”

Additional safety measures include slow movements—do not run. Talk to the bear in a quiet, monotone voice. Don’t kneel or make direct eye contact.

If the bear gets too close, use pepper or bear spray (within seven metres). Go indoors if possible, and bring pets indoors, too.

If you’re in a group, remain in a group and pick up and carry small children. Watch the bear until it has left, and make sure there’s nothing left in the area that could attract the bear back again.

For those who wish to learn more about what to do in a bear encounter, you can visit the government’s website.

Call BC Conservation Service at 1-877-952-7277 or local police as needed.
