Saanich Police investigating after Vancouver Island man claims dog was stolen

A Vancouver Island man is doing everything he can to be reunited with his dog after he says the animal was stolen by a relative last month.

Don Dimen says his two-year-old Shiba Inu, named Bruno, was taken on May 19th around 12:15 p.m. in Crofton. He alleges that after being left stranded, his dog was taken without permission and later spotted in the Victoria area.

Bruno, who was wearing a green harness at the time, is not neutered and has distinct Shiba Inu features.

Don told Victoria Buzz he reported the incident to RCMP shortly after it happened, and later the same day contacted Saanich Police after receiving reports from neighbours that Bruno was seen at a home on Hastings Street.

He claims neighbours saw the dog at the same address on multiple occasions, and that barking was heard coming from the property.

In an email statement to Victoria Buzz, Saanich Police confirmed they are investigating but could not release any other details other than they have received the report.

“On May 24, 2025, the Saanich Police Department received a report from a pet owner that their dog was stolen. An officer has been assigned to this file and we are actively investigating,” said a department spokesperson.

Don told Victoria Buzz that the incident has turned his life upside down as he works to get Bruno back. He’s currently living up island and says his transition to return to the mainland has been put on hold due to the situation.

He’s hopeful that raising awareness will help bring Bruno home. Victoria Buzz attempted to reach out to the accused family member but did not hear back in time for publication.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Saanich Police Department at 250-475-4321.
