Looking for a unique and historic way to spend Canada Day this year?
Parks Canada is inviting the public to celebrate the nation at one of Greater Victoria’s most scenic and historic landmarks.
On Tuesday, July 1st, Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites will welcome visitors from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for a full day of festivities. The event is free to attend and includes a mix of history, music, food, and family-friendly activities.
The highlight of the celebration will be a 21-gun salute at noon, presented by the 5th (BC) Field Artillery Regiment of The Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery. Visitors will also have a chance to view the impressive Howitzer artillery piece on display following the salute.
Throughout the day, the Band of the 5th (BC) Field Regiment will perform live music in the main field. Parks Canada interpreters will offer demonstrations and interpretive programs focusing on Canadian heritage and nature.
Two special historic weapons demonstrations will take place in the afternoon, a small arms presentation titled “Soldier’s Best Friend” at 1:30 p.m., followed by a Victorian-era field gun demonstration called “Firepower” at 2:45 p.m.
Those in attendance can also explore a variety of community partner booths, take part in creative activities, and enjoy several photo-worthy backdrops—including a giant Canada flag at the lighthouse.
Food and refreshments will be available at the canteen, with cold sodas, specially crafted ice cream, and grilled fare prepared by the Ladies Auxiliary.
To make access easier, a free shuttle service will operate from 11:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., between the Colwood Western Exchange Park & Ride and the site.
Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites are located at 603 Fort Rodd Hill Road in Colwood. More information is available at www.pc.gc.ca/fortroddhill.
