Get ready for a powerful new art installation in Victoria!
A bold and inspiring art project is coming to the heart of Fernwood into a celebration of the people who call it home.
Titled Portraits of Fernwood, this large-scale community art installation will launch on Sunday, June 8th, and will take over the exterior wall at 1240 Gladstone Avenue.
The wall will boast 63 striking black-and-white portraits, with the subjects ranging in age and diversity to capture the spirit of the neighbourhood.
Known as an “Inside Out Project” installation, this is the first time that Victoria will take part in this initiative, founded by acclaimed French artist JR.
Since its launch in 2011, the Inside Out Project has sparked over 2,800 community-led “Actions,” which focus on reclaiming a public space via portraiture and working to amplify the voices of those who are often overlooked.
Here in Fernwood, the local Action is being led by community member Christian, who’s been instrumental in bridging the gap between the global movement and the neighbourhood.
“This project is about visibility and belonging,” says Christian.
“It reminds us that the people we pass by every day have stories worth seeing and celebrating. Through art and storytelling, we hope to build stronger, more connected communities.”
If you find yourself in Fernwood this weekend, make sure to stop by. It’s free to attend and open to everyone!
