BC Trails Day is right around the corner, and to celebrate, we wanted to share some favourite trails and hikes in and around Victoria.

BC Trails Day is part of the international celebration of Trails Day on the first Saturday of June, which will be Saturday, June 7th this year.

It’s meant to foster awareness about responsible recreation and environmental stewardship, while also celebrating the beauty we have access to.

Plus, there are events organized by region, and there are a few happening on Vancouver Island, including Sidney and Saanich.

Whether it’s a walk in the park or a challenging hike, remember to pack out what you pack in, stay on designated paths and be aware of your surroundings.

Here’s 5 trails in and around Victoria to check out for BC Trails Day on Saturday, June 7th:

PKOLS (Mount Douglas Park)

Not only are you able to see all of Victoria—including glimpses of downtown Victoria and the harbour, you’re also surrounded by lush, moss-covered forest floors, established trees, and varieties of shrubs.

You can choose to drive to the top or hike from the bottom (Irvine Trail). Note that this hike is considered moderate in difficulty and may be unsuitable for some as it gets steep at times.

There are plenty of leisurely strolling trails in and around the park though, if that’s more your speed!

  • Where: 4500 Cedar Hill Road

Old Baldy Mountain

Old Baldy Mountain is a 3.4 kilometre loop trail near Shawnigan Lake and is generally considered a moderately challenging route.

Taking an average of 1 hour and 21 minutes to complete, it’s a very popular area for hiking, so you’ll encounter other people and leashed dogs while on the trail.

Good footwear is recommended, as it can be steep in sections and has an easy scramble near the top.

  • Where: 2329 Strathcona Heights Road, Shawnigan Lake

Mount Work Summit Trail

Described as a moderately challenging route, Mount Work Summit Trail is a 5.6 kilometre out-and-back trail near South Saanich.

The trail is popular, so it’s well-maintained, although it’s known to intersect with some unmarked mountain biking trails.

Dogs are allowed but have to be leashed.

  • Where: Highlands

Jocelyn Hill

Said to have some of the best views of the Finlayson Arm, Jocelyn Hill is a 9.3 kilometre loop, and is considered a fairly challenging route.

Many trail users use it for birding, hiking and snowshoeing, so you’ll see others while you’re out there.

It’s beautiful to visit and dogs are allowed as long as they’re leashed.

  • Where: 700 Emma Dixon Road in Gowlland Tod Provincial Park

East Sooke Regional Park

If you’re up for more of a challenge, consider the coastal 26.7 kilometre out-and-back trail near East Sooke.

It’s popular for backpacking, birding and camping, and the trail is open year-round. Naturally, you don’t have to complete the entirety of the trail. Many turn back after a few kilometres.

To access the trailhead, park at the Aylard Farm Trailhead.

  • Where: 6807 East Sooke Road, Sooke
