Those whose everyday lives are significantly impacted by acquired brain injuries will soon have access to a new 26-bed supportive housing facility in Central Saanich.
At this site, dubbed Connect Saanich Peninsula, people will receive assistance with the health challenges they face and will have access to improved rehabilitation and supports.
According to Josie Osborne, Minister of Health, people who have acquired serious brain injuries require specialized care and services because of their unique needs, and this facility will help up to 26 people at a time navigate these struggles.
“By expanding access to supportive living homes, we are ensuring people can receive the right care in the right environment,” said Osborne.
“The services and resources available will help people regain their independence, while providing them with the necessary supports and care to live well in the community.”
Connect Saanich Peninsula is to be operated by Connect Communities in partnership with Island Health and the SȾÁUTW̱ (Tsawout) First Nation.
The mandate of the facility is to provide comprehensive rehabilitation-focused therapy and care.
According to the Province, the 26-beds available are comprised of 13 short-term beds for people transitioning to more independent living, as well as 13 long-term beds for those requiring ongoing support.
Connect Saanich Peninsula will reportedly take a ‘Life Redesign Model’ approach to its care, which aims to empower individuals to set their own goals and work towards them through occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, recreational therapy and support from social workers and psychologists.
“In my opinion, this program will greatly serve to create community and belonging, as well as dependability, consistency and calm to life and for those supported,” said Dean, a client of the Island Health brain-injury program.
Following the opening of the Connect Saanich Peninsula facility, a second Connect Communities supportive living home is slated to open in Parksville in 2026.
Connect Saanich Peninsula will be open sometime this summer.
