This summer, something truly special is steeping in the heart of Royal Roads University!
For the first time ever, visitors can enjoy a traditional Japanese tea ceremony in the stunning handcrafted Teahouse nestled within Hatley Park’s Japanese garden.
Hosted by the Urasenke Tankōkai Victoria Association, the experience invites guests to take part in Chadō—also known as the Way of Tea.
More than just a drink, this centuries-old Japanese ritual is a meditative art form centered on harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility. With roots dating back to the 16th century, Chadō is all about intentionality and presence, offering a rare opportunity to slow down and connect with the moment.
The Teahouse, which opened its doors for the first time in the summer of 2024, brings an authentic and peaceful new dimension to Hatley Park. Surrounded by the natural beauty of Royal Roads’ heritage gardens, it’s a serene setting that feels worlds away from city life.
This inaugural tea experience runs from May to September, with ceremonies scheduled for the last Sunday of each month.
Each date offers four seatings, with up to eight guests per session. The experience is priced at $16 per person (plus GST), and advance reservations are required, as space is limited, and demand is expected to be high.
The tea ceremony also complements Royal Roads’ regular summer offerings, including daily guided walking tours of Hatley Castle and its historic gardens.
While you’re on campus, you can also swing by the Garden Booth near the Italian Gardens for tour tickets, or grab a bite at Habitat Café, which is open from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays.
For those looking to immerse themselves in quiet beauty and meaningful tradition, the Chadō tea experience is a perfect addition to any summer itinerary in Victoria.
Don’t forget, pinkies up!
