Stolen excavator joyride ends in Sidney after early morning highway cruise

A man was arrested early Tuesday after stealing a massive excavator and taking it for an early morning joyride from Victoria to Sidney, causing a stir on the Pat Bay Highway.

According to VicPD, someone stole a bright yellow Caterpillar 966 wheel loader, which was spotted rumbling down the Pat Bay Highway just after sunrise.

Yep, someone actually stole an excavator and took it for a joyride.

The oversized adventure began around 5:30 a.m. on May 27th, when the manager of a business on Gorge Road East called police after discovering their fence had been flattened and their excavator was, well, missing.

As you can imagine, it’s not easy to sneak off with something that stands nearly 15 feet tall and comes with a front scoop the size of a hot tub.

About an hour later, drivers near McTavish Road did a double-take as the hefty machine rolled northbound along the highway.

Sidney RCMP eventually tracked the loader down around 7:30 a.m., parked in a Sidney neighbourhood with one person still inside. The man was arrested, handed off to VicPD, and taken into custody.

No one was hurt, the loader is back where it belongs, and somewhere out there, a fence is being repaired. As for the suspect, police are still investigating what inspired his pre-dawn construction caper.
