Port Hardy RCMP say a teenager is now recovering after an alleged assault which left them severely injured in a wooded area of the Gwa’Sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Nations (GNN) Reserve.
According to police, just before 6 p.m. on April 30th, officers responded to an isolated dirt road on the GNN reserve following a report being called in of a youth being severely injured.
Upon arrival, police say they found out that a suspect was seen fleeing the scene into the bushes.
As Port Hardy RCMP officers contained the area, a police dog was flown up from the Comox Valley in an RCMP helicopter.
The police dog reportedly tracked down and located a youth suspect who was subsequently arrested.
Following the arrest, a second youth suspect was identified and taken into custody from a nearby residence.
Police say the youth victim was taken to hospital, where they are currently receiving care for serious injuries; however, their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
The victim and the suspect are known to each other, according to police.

“Thank you to those who observed, reported and rendered assistance. BC EHS, Port McNeill RCMP, RCMP Air Services, Police Dog Services and the Port Hardy RCMP worked together to ensure a swift restoration of community safety.”
Police say the investigation is ongoing and is being aided by the Island District RCMP General Investigation Section.
