Bird enthusiasts, this is for you!
Saanich is on the hunt for its very first ‘official bird,’ and you’re invited to help decide which feathered friend will take the title.
The contest, a joint initiative between the District of Saanich and Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary, aims to celebrate local wildlife and highlight the region’s Bird Friendly City certification.
Four local species have made the shortlist: the charming Bewick’s Wren, the sleek Cooper’s Hawk, the iconic Great Horned Owl, and the colourful Northern Flicker.
Each of these birds was selected for its strong ties to the region—they’re all native to North America, call Greater Victoria home year-round, and haven’t already been named the official bird of another Canadian city.
Voting is open now and runs until June 7th!
You can cast your vote online or in person at several local spots including Swan Lake Nature House, Saanich Municipal Hall, Cedar Hill Recreation Centre, Gordon Head Recreation Centre, G.R. Pearkes Recreation Centre, and Saanich Commonwealth Place.
The winner will be announced at Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary’s Annual General Meeting on June 12th, and shared via their social media channels as well as the Saanich Parks, Recreation & Community Services Facebook page.
Whether you’re a birding enthusiast or just love the natural beauty of Saanich, this is your chance to help crown a new avian ambassador for the region.
