A late-night speeder—who was also impaired—was nabbed going more than double the speed limit on the Pat Bay Highway this week.

On Thursday, May 29, just before 3 a.m., Saanich Police spotted a vehicle speeding excessively in the 4000 block of the Pat Bay Highway.

Police reported receiving multiple readings that showed the vehicle was traveling at 174 km/hr in an 80 km/hr zone.

The driver allegedly refused to stop for the officer, and instead continued to speed southbound down the highway before turning off at Vernon Avenue.

The officer didn’t pursue the vehicle but did circulate through the Carey Road area and located the vehicle parked on a dead-end side street.

Police ordered the driver out of the vehicle and was taken into custody.

The officer reportedly had reason to suspect the driver was impaired and was ordered to submit to a screening device, which he failed.

He was issued a 90 day driving prohibition and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

Additionally, he was also issued multiple traffic tickets, which included one for failing to display an “N” and one for excessive speeding.

Police will recommend that the driver also be charged with flight from a police officer and impaired operation of a motor vehicle.

The driver was later released from custody.
