Don’t panic, Victoria—it’s just a test!
The BC Emergency Alert system will be administering a test on Wednesday, May 7th at 1:55 p.m. (PDT).
The alerts broadcast on TV, radio and cell phones and provide urgent, life-saving information during emergency situations.
In the event of an emergency, before a province-wide alert is given, the situation has to meet the following criteria:
- There is a threat to human life
- The threat is immediate
- There are recommended actions that may save lives
There are different agencies depending on the circumstances, so alerts can be sent from agencies such as RCMP, climate readiness, the Canadian government, among others.
If you ever receive an alert that is not a test, stop what you’re doing and check to see if it’s applicable to the area you’re in.
Most importantly, don’t panic and don’t call 911 to clarify details on the alert. Only call 911 if you’re trapped and unable to evacuate or are experiencing a medical or safety emergency.
