A distressing moment was caught on dashcam last week, showing a dog falling out of a moving pickup truck into a busy downtown Victoria intersection.
The incident happened around 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 14th, as a white truck turned left from Blanshard Street onto Pandora Avenue.
In the video, first shared on Reddit, a dog can be seen with its head out of the rear passenger window. As the driver accelerates through the turn, the dog is flung from the vehicle, landing on the road and limping away in clear distress.
The poster, who shared the video online, said several vehicles stopped and pedestrians rushed to help. “Various vehicles honked to get the truck driver’s attention,” they wrote.
“The driver sped up while turning and the dog flew out the window.”
Another Reddit user claimed they witnessed the aftermath firsthand, describing the chaotic scene. “The owner parked down the block after barely noticing his dog fell out and was angrily screaming ‘Pete, get back here NOW!’ to his poor limping dog,” they wrote.
“Eventually it ran back to its owner… The dude basically ignored us as he threw his injured dog back into the bed of his pickup and took off.”
The BC SPCA confirmed they are investigating the incident. “This is an open and ongoing investigation and as such we cannot comment further at this time,” the organization said in a statement to Victoria Buzz.

While the current condition of the dog is unknown, the incident has reignited concern about the safety of animals in vehicles—especially those left unsecured or allowed to hang their heads out windows.
In their email to Victoria Buzz, the BC SPCA shared a list of tips to help pet guardians keep their animals safe while travelling:
- Pets should be restrained using a crash-tested harness or secured in a crate that is fastened to the vehicle
- Dogs are safest in the back seat or cargo area—not in the front where airbags can cause harm
- Letting pets hang their heads out of car windows can cause injuries from dust or debris
- It’s illegal and dangerous to transport a loose animal in the bed of a pickup truck. The safest method is a secured crate placed in the centre of the truck box
- Never drive with a pet on your lap. Not only is it unsafe, it can also result in fines for distracted driving
In an email statement to Victoria Buzz, VicPD said there is no police file currently open for this case.
