Beginning this spring, VicPD will start using drones to monitor events in order to act more quickly should a crime be committed or an emergency take place.
VicPD refers to these drones as Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS), which feature camera technology designed to improve police’s ability to monitor public events and respond quickly to any potential public safety incidents.
Police say their RPAS will be utilized to help create a safer environment for the public during some community events as well as unfolding emergency situations.
“VicPD provides policing support to more than 50 public events each year, in addition to an increasing number of demonstrations,” said VicPD Chief Del Manak.
The RPAS is the next step in our strategic plan of supporting community safety, preventing crime, and contributing to community vibrancy.”
These drones will be piloted by certified Transport Canada pilots from VicPD.
Police say the events that they will be used at will include some special events, protests, rallies or any events that require police attendance for safety purposes.
At these events, officers will monitor the footage captured by the RPAS to identify potential incidents unfolding on the ground, and provide insights that allow them to distribute resources efficiently.
According to VicPD, the RPAS camera does not record by default, but if footage needs to be recorded to gather evidence, or capture an incident, the public will be notified.
Any footage captured will be stored for 30 days or longer.
Police noted that no information would be collected during an event unless a criminal investigation or public disorder incident occurs.
