The Victoria and Esquimalt Police Board say they have concluded their search for VicPD’s next chief constable.
According to a media release, Fiona Wilson was unanimously selected as the next chief constable.
Wilson is currently serving as one of three deputy chief constables with the Vancouver Police Department (VPD). Through her career, she has more than 26 years of experience she will bring to VicPD.
She has worked in leadership positions with VPD, including overseeing their Investigation Division, the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, Court and Detention Services, Federal Serious and Organized Crime, Major Crimes, and Professional Standards.
Most notably for Vancouver Islanders, she handled an external investigation into the two Central Saanich Police officers who were charged with sexual assault last December.
“We are thrilled to welcome Deputy Chief Fiona Wilson as the next Chief Constable of VicPD,” said Micayla Hayes, Chair of the Victoria and Esquimalt Police Board.
“She brings a wealth of experience, strong values, and a deep commitment to public service. Throughout her career she has demonstrated exceptional leadership and the ability to guide complex, community-focused policing initiatives.”
Hayes added that Wilson stood out among the candidates and impressed the Board with her vision for supporting both VicPD officers and civilian workers as well as strengthening trust in the communities of Victoria and Esquimalt.
Wilson says she is excited to have been selected.
“I am deeply committed to serving the communities of Victoria and Esquimalt with transparency, integrity, and compassion,” said Wilson.
“I believe in the power of collaborative policing, grounded in service to both the public and our dedicated sworn members and civilian professionals. Together, we will continue building a safer, more inclusive, and respectful environment for all.”
Additionally, both mayors of Esquimalt and Victoria say they look forward to having Wilson onboard.
“Deputy Chief Wilson is an impressive leader with incredible skills well suited to the demands of Victoria and Esquimalt,” said Marianne Alto Victoria Mayor and VicPD Board member
“She is the right choice for our communities now.”
Wilson is married and has three children who will be making the move to Victoria with her.
She will begin her duties as Chief Constable on August 15th, and will have two weeks to work alongside current Chief Constable Del Manak before his retirement on August 31st.
