Two pedestrians were rushed to hospital — one in critical condition — after being struck by a vehicle on the Trans-Canada Highway at the north end of Duncan early Thursday morning.

The incident occurred just before 6 a.m. in the northbound lanes between York Road and Beverley Street.

BC Emergency Health Services confirmed that two ambulances responded to the scene. One of the victims was transported to hospital in critical condition, while the other pedestrian was reported to be in stable condition.

The collision caused significant traffic delays, with Drive BC reporting the northbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway were “fully blocked” following the incident. As of 10:15 a.m., conditions had not changed, and Drive BC noted it would provide another update around noon.

The crash site is located near the planned location of a pedestrian overpass — a stretch of road long considered hazardous for pedestrians.

The BC government is currently seeking community input on the design and functionality of the proposed overpass, which would span the busy section of Highway 1 between Beverly Street and James Street/York Road, approximately 700 metres apart.

According to the Province, the goal of the overpass is to enhance safety for both drivers and pedestrians along this well-travelled corridor.

It’s estimated that roughly 30% of all pedestrian activity in this area is unsafe. With a new secondary school set to open nearby, officials say the need for improved pedestrian infrastructure is more urgent than ever.

The proposed improvements would also benefit people travelling by bicycle, wheelchair, skateboard, and scooter, with added features aimed at improving accessibility and visibility.

Planned upgrades include modified turning lanes and new curbs designed to better define the road’s edges and improve traffic flow.

Police have not yet released further details about the individuals involved in Thursday’s collision or whether any charges are being considered.
