Since opening its doors just two months ago, The Coda has been hosting concerts for music of all genres.
This week, they are hosting two big bands: the Stelly’s Secondary School Jazz Band, which is comprised of 20 students from Grades 9 to 12 and the Bayside Big Band.
The Stelly’s Secondary School Jazz Band performs a wide variety of music, including traditional swing, Latin and even popular rock songs.
Proceeds from the show’s ticket sales will help fund the Stelly’s jazz program.
“Playing at a venue like The Coda is a thrill for the kids, and sharing the stage with such a great community-oriented ensemble is so amazing”, says Norbert Ziegler, band teacher at Stelly’s Secondary.
“It’s all about giving the kids great experiences and showing them what is possible if they continue playing beyond high school.”
Meanwhile, the Bayside Big Band is one of the longest running big bands in Greater Victoria, specializing in taking audiences on a musical journey back in time.
They will perform an array of original jazz standards with the occasional contemporary tune while staying true to the standard big band template of a 17-piece band of five saxes, four trumpets, four trombones, bass, guitar, drums, piano and a vocalist.
“Most of us have been playing for 40 years, and started in school music programs.”, says Kryn Zedel, baritone saxophone player for the Bayside Big Band.
“It’s a no brainer, and so rewarding for this band to share a fundraising performance in this great venue with these young jazz musicians.”
Co-owner of The Coda, Al Smith, is a graduate from Stelly’s and was once part of the school’s band himself.
“We are super excited to support the development of younger musicians. It is very important to us,” said Smith.
The show is slated for Tuesday, April 8th at The Coda.
