Nanaimo RCMP have launched an investigation into a shooting that took place in Bowen Park earlier today.

According to police, the shooting took place in the park at around 6 a.m. on Friday, April 25th, near the intersection of Bowen Road and Wakesiah Avenue.

The investigation was launched following the victim arriving at the hospital with a gunshot wound.

Police conducted a search of an encampment at Bowen Park and searched a tent and its surroundings. In their search Nanaimo RCMP say they found several firearms, allegedly stolen property and several other prohibited items.

Police say one person was initially taken into custody, but has since been released with no charges pending against them.

“While it is early in the investigation, it appears the injury may have been self-inflicted,” said R/Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

“Police were unable to find any other victims and no suspects have been identified.”

Anyone who has information on this incident should contact Nanaimo RCMP at (250) 754-2345.
