Canada’s oldest Chinese temple is located in downtown Victoria, and is currently in the running for a $50,000 national prize.
The Tam Kung Temple, located in the heart of Chinatown, is a vital piece of Victoria’s rich cultural heritage, and they need the community’s support.
It’s currently vying for a chance to win $50,000 through the National Trust for Canada’s “Next Great Save” competition, and is among 12 finalists competing for the grand prize.
This funding will be used to create a new reception and interpretation area that will improve accessibility, preserve unique artifacts, promote education, and help preserve the temple’s cultural legacy for future generations.
Voting is open now and runs until Thursday, April 17th! Every vote counts, and you can vote every day to help the temple secure this funding.
About the Tam Kung Temple
Tam Kung Temple holds the title of Canada’s oldest Chinese temple, standing tall in Victoria since 1876.
In February 2025, the temple earned the distinguished designation of a National Historic Site from the Government of Canada, further cementing its importance in Chinese Canadian history.
Managed by the Yen Wo Society since 1905, it’s not just a tourist attraction—it’s an active place of worship and a vital gathering space for the community. It’s also a living connection to the traditions of the Hakka people.
“We are honored to be part of this competition,” said Nora Butz, President of the Yen Wo Society.
“This funding would allow us to better share our history and traditions with the wider community while preserving the temple for generations to come. We encourage everyone to vote daily and help us secure this opportunity.”
The temple’s history stretches back to the 1860s when Chinese gold seekers brought the deity Tam Kung to Victoria, seeking protection and guidance.
Over the years, Tam Kung Temple has continued to serve as a symbol of resilience and cultural preservation, welcoming visitors from around the world to experience its rich heritage.
