A seven-year-old Pomeranian mix named Gracie is recovering at a Victoria-area foster home after undergoing emergency surgery to remove an eye that was severely injured in a dog fight.
Gracie was brought to a local vet clinic with a traumatic injury where her eye had been dislodged from its socket. The veterinary team reached out to the BC SPCA Victoria branch, and staff didn’t hesitate to step in and fund the care she needed.
“The clinic contacted us hoping we could provide this sweet dog with the care she desperately needed,” said Emma Hamill, manager of the BC SPCA Victoria animal centre.
“We didn’t hesitate to step in and agreed to cover the costs of the surgery and any further treatments she might require.”
In addition to the emergency surgery, Gracie received pain relief, antibiotics, and will require spay and oral surgeries in the future.
Despite everything she’s been through, Gracie’s personality continues to shine.
“Gracie is a loving, affectionate little dog and is becoming more confident every day,” Hamill said. “She’s currently recovering from surgery at a BC SPCA foster home and loves to sit on her foster’s lap. She has a real interest in exploring the world around her and loves going for walks—she’s building up her fitness.”
The staff says Gracie is a bit of a picky eater, but her manners are impeccable, and she greets everyone she meets with kindness.
Once she’s ready for adoption, Gracie will be featured on the BC SPCA website.
