Step into a beloved fairy tale with the whole family!

Get ready for a magical experience this spring as the Canadian Heritage Arts Society (CHAS) and the Canadian College of Performing Arts (CCPA) present a reimagined version of classic, Cinderella

Opening Friday, April 18th and running until Saturday, April 26th with a total of eight performances, the production is sure to delight audiences with a blend of stunning visuals, witty humour and magic.

This timeless tale gets a refreshing twist that’s set to the unforgettable music of Rodgers and Hammerstein, as well as a new book by playwright Douglas Carter Beane

Directed and choreographed by Naomi Costain, a prominent figure in Victoria’s theatre community, the show features talented emerging artists of CCPA.

Costain’s connection to the CHAS goes back to its very roots—she first worked with co-founders Janis Dunning and Jacques Lemay on Spirit of a Nation, a production and training program that led to the founding of CCPA in 1998.

In a media release, Costain said that the idea of transformation and self-love is the heart of the story.

“Within us all is a kernel of belief that we have value and deserve love,” said Costain.

“This theme shows up throughout the show as Ella grows to believe in herself. What better message to leave with than the power of our own self-worth?”

Also included in this production is music director Jeff Poynter, who in collaboration with the Victoria Conservatory of Music, has assembled a talented orchestra of University of Victoria music students.

According to the CCPA, this marks the third year that Poynter has led this incredible opportunity, providing students with hands-on training while connecting them with professionals and fellow students from CCPA.

The Victoria Conservatory of Music has generously supported the production by loaning large percussion instruments that are typically hard to come by.

“I have always been passionate about sharing my theatre/dance knowledge with emerging artists,” added Costain.

“This is an art form that truly needs to be passed along in the studio and rehearsal halls, we draw from all our past teachers and directors, and share that experience. It’s an essential part of our art form. CCPA students are always eager to learn, and generous with each other.”

Don’t miss your chance to experience Rodgers and Hammerstein’s reimagined Cinderella, brought to life by the incredible students and some of Victoria’s top talents!
