Most British Columbians want Canada to abandon the constitutional monarchy

Share

According to a recent poll, most British Columbians are not content with Canada being a constitutional monarchy, preferring the country to become an independent republic.

Canada is technically run by the British monarchy, with an appointed Governor General and Lieutenant Governors representing King Charles III in all legislation and decision making in government.

If Canada would become a republic, it would mean no more representatives of the monarchy in government, with Canadians voting on the official head of state.

Earlier this week, the BC-based polling firm, Research Co., conducted a survey asking whether Canadians would like to remain a constitutional monarchy, or leave the Commonwealth to be our own independent republic.

The survey found that 32% of British Columbians favoured the system we have now, while 36% would rather do away with Canada’s ties to Britain and elect our own head of state.

Meanwhile 20% said they did not care and 13% said they were unsure.

When asked if respondents believe Canada will remain a constitutional monarchy or if we will become a republic in the next 20 years, most believe the status quo will be maintained with 54% saying we will remain a part of the British monarchy.

Conversely, just 31% said Canada will abandon the monarchy and become an independent republic, and 16% were unsure.

Research Co. asked respondents what they thought about some specific matters dealing with the British monarchy that oversees our government.

BC respondents were asked if they thought King Charles III should put more effort into reconciliation with Canada’s Indigenous Peoples, 53% agreed, 35% disagreed and 12% said they were unsure.

On the matter of whether the King should put effort into reducing the carbon footprint of the Royal Family, 59% of British Columbians said he should, 31% said he shouldn’t and 11% said they were not sure.

What do you think about Canada and its relationship to the British monarchy?
