This Monday, March 17th, the Langford city council wrapped up its budget talks, and has settled on a 9.77% tax increase for homeowners in order to pay for City initiatives.
According to Langford, the approved budget increase will help pay for nine new firefighters, four new West Shore RCMP officers and costs absorbed by the City for E-Comm emergency dispatch services.
Additionally, the City noted inflation and significant infrastructure projects as being reasons for the tax hike.
Although 9.77% may seem high to some, the tax increase was initially going to be much higher.
“Council worked diligently to reduce the 2025 budget from 14.51% to 9.77%,” stated Scott Goodmanson, Mayor of Langford.
“Council believes this budget strikes a balance between continuing to invest in the community, prioritizing public safety, and maintaining service levels while acknowledging the uncertainty of current financial conditions and the need to be prudent.”
In addition to approving the 2025 budget, council asked staff to bring back further information on the projected tax increases from 2026 to 2029.
The next four years of their Five-Year Financial Plan will be discussed in the committee of the whole meeting that will be held on April 8th.
