BC Transit announces fare changes in Victoria will begin in April

Share

Transit in Greater Victoria is about to get more expensive.

Last year, BC Transit and the Victoria Regional Transit Commission completed a review of fares and asked the public how they would prefer fare increases be implemented.

Following this review process, BC Transit has decided that as of April 1st, single rides will be upped from $2.50 to $3.

With this, a DayPASS will be increased from $5 to $6, but this allows bus-goers to ride all day with no additional charges.

By using Umo, BC Transit’s payment app, those who use the bus can load up their Umo wallet and scan in their wallet code to pay. Once they have scanned their code twice in the same day, they will not be charged any more for additional rides.

In addition to the single ride and DayPASS increases, handyDART riders will also see increases in fares.

Sheets of 10 single ride tickets, which are sold exclusively for handyDART users, will increase from $25 to $30.

BC Transit says that the $45 Concession 30-Day Pass and $85 Adult 30-Day Pass will remain unchanged, along with all other specialty passes. Concession 30-Day Passes are meant for seniors, youth and those with disabilities.

“The cost of operating transit has increased, as has the demand for service with an ever-growing population,” said BC Transit in a media release.

“This fare increase will support BC Transit’s ability to improve and expand on service in the region in the coming years.”

Before these price increases, transit in Victoria has not seen any increased prices since 2010.
