‘The Coda’ set to host grand opening this weekend in Victoria’s former Hermann’s Upstairs

The Coda is officially all moved into the former Hermann’s Upstairs space at 751 View Street and will be hosting two nights of live music and dance to celebrate their grand opening this weekend.

Al Smith and Christina Morrison took over the space in November of last year after winning the bid to open a venue in the space, and have been working around the clock to get The Coda ready for opening day.

Although renovations and upgrades are still ongoing, Smith and Morrison’s plan from the get-go was to just get the place open and ready for music.

Now, the space is ready to host shows in both the ‘bar room’ and the ‘main room.’

“As soon as our last permit was secured, we didn’t want to wait another day before getting the space open and filled with live music,” said Morrison.

“Victorians are hungry for a place they can go to find community and share experiences.”

On Friday, February 14th, there will be a Valentine’s dance in the bar room from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. with The Fabulous B-Sides, a six-piece band playing contemporary and classic tunes.

Following this, the main stage will host a ‘Rhythm & Blues All-Star Showcase Revue’ and ‘Motown Stage Show Spectacular’ with a 12-piece band called The Midnights from 9:30 p.m. to late.

Then on Saturday, February 15th, both rooms will be filled from 7 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. with Pablo Cardenas presenting Club Havana, a mainstay of the former Hermann’s Upstairs space.

The Coda will be playing Latin music all night long for people to dance along to, highlighting the history of popular Cuban music. The West Coast Cuban All Star Orchestra will be playing numerous sets and there will be a Latin DJ as support.

There will also be a salsa dance lesson and performance by Salsa Caliente in between sets.

“This project has been a lot of work, but I know it will be worth it.” said Smith.

“We want to make sure that there is a supportive home for live music in Victoria. The Coda is the place musicians can share their work, connect to their community, and feel valued. We are excited for the future!”

Smith and Morrison hope that people will attend and help spread the word that The Coda is now open.
