Nanaimo RCMP are investigating a suspicious vehicle fire that occurred earlier this week.

On Tuesday, February 11th at around 9:30 p.m., emergency services were called to the scene, where a vehicle was on fire at the intersection of Summerhill Place and Dufferin Crescent in Nanaimo.

The vehicle was identified as a Fiat 500, and the back tire and door on the passenger’s side were damaged.

Following the fire, Nanaimo resident Bryony Clare took to social media stating the car belonged to former MLA Gwen O’Mahony.

In the post, Clare had stated that she and O’Mahony gave an interview to Rebel Media, which aired on Sunday. Following the interview going live, the couple claimed they began receiving death threats.

“The very same day I was told to ‘live looking over [my] shoulder’ by a radical trans activist on the Island,” the Facebook post read.

“In anycase [sic], extremist violence and intimidation tactics only bolster my reserve. The well funded radicals should have learned this when they drove me from my job back in 2023. We. Will. Not. Be. Silenced.”

O’Mahony also took to social media confirming the vehicle was hers and believes the act was targeted.

Police are requesting that any motorist who was parked near this intersection on the day of the incident, between 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., to review their dash camera footage.

Victoria Buzz reached out to Nanaimo RCMP and they also confirmed the owner of the car to be O’Mahony and that the investigation is ongoing.

You can report any findings to Nanaimo RCMP’s non-emergency line at (250) 754-2345.
