Oak Bay High School was evacuated on Friday morning after a fire broke out in one of the school’s washrooms.

The fire was reported just before 10 a.m. inside a boys’ washroom, prompting an immediate response from the Oak Bay Fire Department.

All students and staff were safely evacuated, and no injuries have been reported.

“This morning (Feb 7), the Oak Bay Fire Department responded to a fire in a washroom at Oak Bay High School. All students and staff have been evacuated and are safe. Oak Bay High families have been notified,” said the Greater Victoria School District (SD61).

As recommended by the Fire Department, students and staff are not to re-enter the building and, as a result, have been dismissed for the rest of the day.

If students must return to the building to retrieve a personal item from the school, they can arrive at the main entrance of the building at 2 p.m. today.

A member of the Fire Department will retrieve the item for the student.

“We thank the school staff, students, and Oak Bay Fire Department for their swift response and evacuation.”

Oak Bay Police stated in a media release that the cause of the fire remains unknown, and no suspects have been identified.

“The Saanich Police Department Forensic Identification Section responded to assist with the investigation, which remains ongoing in collaboration with fire officials.”

The extent of the damage has not been released.
